At the "entrance" to Valle d'Itria, Castellana Grotte rises on a calcareous plateau originating from about 90 million years ago. Its name reveals a dual identity: on one hand, a fertile land enriched with groves of olive, almond and cherry trees but also traditional farmhouses (masserie), conical houses (trulli) and dry-stone walls; on the other hand, one of the most impressive karst landscapes in Italy.

The visit of the caves of Castellana follows an easily walkable course, a fascinating excursion along a subterranean cavity at about 70 meters underground. There are two itineraries, varying in lenght and distance. Following the complete itinerary, which is about 3 Km, you can reach the White Cave, defined as the most splendid in the world for the luminosity of the alabaster which characterizes it.

For those who prefer to stay on the surface, Castellana Grotte offers a journey through its traditions. Among its unmissable events, in january there is the festival of "Fanòve", the lighting up of a lot of enormous bonfires which burn all night long in honor of the patron saint "Madonna della Vetrana". While, from june to september, there are many wine and food festivals interspersed with life music shows and sporting events (in particular the World Dance Movement, international dance workshop).
